19 Year Old John Florence Wins Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and Nixon WTA

Hawaii teenager John John Florence, 19, who finished 5th after losing to world champ Kelly Slater (USA) today, also found his way to the podium as the overall winner of the 2011 Vans Triple Crown series presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. There was no question he was the man to beat on the famed North Shore of Oahu this year.

"A fifth at Haleiwa, a win at Sunset, a fifth here and the Vans Triple Crown title, it's pretty much been the best winter of my life," said Florence. "There are some incredible names on this trophy. I'm so stoked to be here and to have won this. I've been surfing these waves my entire life and watching everyone over the years. To have my name with the great surfers who has won the Triple Crown, it's incredible. I just want to say thanks to my mum and Pancho Sullivan and John Pyzel and all my sponsors. Thanks to everyone."

ENCINITAS, CA- Beginning November 12, the final stop of the 2011 Nixon WTA will kick off at the first stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing during the Reef Hawaiian Pro on the North Shore of Oahu. The Vans World Cup of Surfing and Billabong Pipe Masters will round out the Triple Crown events and ultimately the overall winner, based on accumulation of most points during those contests, will walk away with a Nixon WTA victory.

The Nixon WTA is a winner-takes-all event which awards custom, limited edition Nixon timepieces for accomplishments made in the water that are unique to four stops along the ASP World Tour. Earlier in the year, Nixon WTA titles and watches were awarded to Josh Kerr for “Biggest Air” in Rio de Janeiro, Jordy Smith for “Highest Heat Score” in Jefferys Bay, and Jeremy Flores for “Heaviest Wave” in Teahupoo.

Commencing on the North Shore of Oahu, The Nixon WTA and overall Triple Crown of Surfing winner will take home bragging rights and a custom one-of-a-kind black ceramic automatic Nixon 51-30 watch. This Swiss made mechanical timepiece is adorned with 50 black diamonds on the bezel, six black sapphires, 95 black diamond accents, as well as a Hawaiian flag on the dial. The one-of-a-kind watch is customized with an engraved caseback of the Nixon WTA logo, an etched Hawaiian flag complimenting the sidewall of the case, and is valued at over $10,000 USD.

Defending his claim to the Nixon WTA and overall Triple Crown title this year is three-time event winner (2008, 2009, 2010), Joel Parkinson.
