Elimination Rounds 2 and 3 Called ON at Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy IronsDec 16, 2018
The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Men’s Championship Tour (CT), will be live at 8:00 a.m. HST with Rounds 2 and 3 in 6-to-10 foot NW swell with moderate easterly offshore winds at Pipe and Backdoor.
“We are starting at 8:00 a.m. local time with Rounds 2 and 3 of the Billabong Pipe Masters,” said Kieren Perrow, WSL Commissioner. “We will run 40-minute, overlapping heats for Rounds 2 and 3 in order to capitalize on the conditions we have on offer today at Pipe and Backdoor.”
The Billabong Pipe Masters will determine the 2018 Men’s World Champion. Only three athletes remain in contention to claim the World Title: Gabriel Medina (BRA), Julian Wilson (AUS), and Filipe Toledo (BRA).
Round 1 kicked off the competition with Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Julian Wilson (AUS) advancing straight to Round 3 after winning Round 1. Filipe Toledo (BRA), on the other hand, suffered a potentially serious setback in his campaign after being defeated by Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in the opening round. In a barrel-starved heat, Toledo, Wilkinson and Caio Ibelli (BRA) battled mostly with traditional maneuvers, with the Australian claiming the top two scores for his backhand attack at Backdoor.
Up first this morning, Toledo will have a chance to redeem himself in the opening heat of Round 2 as he will face wildcard Benji Brand (HAW) for a spot into Round 3.
The Men's World Title Scenarios at the Billabong Pipe Masters
- If Gabriel Medina finishes 1st or 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters, he wins the World Title;
- If Gabriel Medina finishes 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters, Julian Wilson and Filipe Toledo will need to finish 1st;
- If Gabriel Medina finishes 5th-25th, Julian Wilson and Filipe Toledo will need a 2nd or 1st at Pipe.
