Lay Day Called Due to Massive Swell at the Billabong Pipe Masters

Dec 13, 2017

The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the third event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS), has been called OFF for the day with massive surf washing through the Pipe lineup and unfavorable winds on offer.

"As expected, the swell is washing through the Pipe lineup, making the surf uncontestable today," said WSL Commissioner, Kieren Perrow. "Wave face heights are up to twenty feet and there is more massive surf expected throughout the day from this extra-large NW swell. The public is advised to stay off the sand and stay clear of surges, which are pushing up to the property lines along the North Shore. We will reconvene tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make a call by 7:30 a.m. local time."

When competition resumes, three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) will face 2017 CT Rookie Frederico Morais (PRT) and Italo Ferreira (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 12.

Sebastian Zietz (HAW) will go up against  Adrian Buchan (AUS) and Ian Gouveia (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 10 of the Billabong Pipe Masters.

2012 Pipe Master Joel Parkinson (AUS) will be one to watch in Round 1 as he comes up against 2017 CT rookies Connor O’Leary (AUS) and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:30 a.m. HST tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for:

XXL NW swell will peak Wednesday morning, washing out Pipe, and be accompanied by onshore wind.  Thursday and Friday will see a decreasing trend in swell with strong NE trades and conditions will remain far less than ideal. Much smaller NNW swell is expected Saturday with much lighter wind also possible. A mid-size, new NW swell is on track to build through Sunday, peak early Monday and ease Monday afternoon along with light wind. A mid to shorter period NNW swell is possible over the final days of the event window and wind may remain light.
