Lay Day Called at Billabong Pipe Masters

Dec 09, 2017

The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the third gem of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS), has been called OFF for the day due to small conditions on offer.

“It is the second day of the window and we are calling competition off for the day,” said WSL Deputy Commissioner, Renato Hickel. “It is only three-to-four foot here at Pipe and a declining swell with a forecast of onshore winds for this afternoon. But, we have good news because tomorrow there is an eight-to-twelve foot swell arriving on the island. We will come back tomorrow for the next call.”

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:00 a.m. HST tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

Going into the Billabong Pipe Masters, four surfers remain in contention to clinch the title: reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) who leads the rankings, Gabriel Medina (BRA), Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Julian Wilson (AUS). Florence will win his second WSL Title if he makes the final at Pipeline.

World Title Scenarios going into the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- If Florence gets 1st or 2nd at Pipe he will clinch the World Title;
- If Florence gets a 3rd, Medina will need a1st at Pipe to win the World Title;
- If Florence gets a 5th, Medina will need a1st at Pipe to win the World Title;
- If Florence gets a 9th, Medina will need a 2nd, Smith a 1st;
- If Florence, gets a 13th or 25th, Medina will need a 5th, Smith a 2nd and Wilson a 1st

Round 1 will see exciting match-ups as the world’s best surfers compete to become the next Pipe Master and for the coveted World Title.

Reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) will battle Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) and Dusty Payne (HAW), the winner of yesterday’s Pipe Invitational, in Round 1 Heat 6.

2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) will be up against Miguel Pupo (BRA) and Benji Brand (HAW), Pipe Invitational runner-up, in Heat 5.

Jordy Smith (ZAF) will face veteran Bede Durbidge (AUS) and 2017 CT Rookie Ethan Ewing (AUS) in Round 1 Heat 4, while Julian Wilson (AUS) will see Vans World Cup of Surfing winner Conner Coffin (USA) and compatriot Stuart Kennedy (AUS) in Round 1 Heat 3 when the Billabong Pipe Masters gets back underway.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for:

The next several days are packed with swell, but the windows for favorable conditions will be sporadic. Mid size surf on Saturday morning is accompanied by light wind, but surf will fade through the day as wind trends onshore. A large, maxed out NNW swell will build on Sunday the 10th, along with NE trades. Monday the 11th should be similar to this morning (both size and wind).  Watching for another significant NW swell to peak on Wednesday the 13th; Pipe will likely be maxed out and wind conditions may be poor. Then finally, a smaller, yet still fun size WNW-NW swell possible for the 18th-20th.
