Another Lay Day at the Billabong Pipe Masters

Dec 14, 2017

The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the third event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS), has been called OFF for the day after contest organizers put the event on standby at 8:00 a.m. HST this morning and determined the conditions were too unfavorable for competition by 10:00 a.m. HST.

"After putting the event on standby and watching the conditions for over two hours, we have decided to call the Pipe Masters off today," said WSL Commissioner, Kieren Perrow. "The messy surf and strong winds are providing incontestable surf and are not forecasted to improve anytime soon so we will come back again tomorrow morning to reassess conditions and make another call."

When competition resumes, three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) will face 2017 CT Rookie Frederico Morais (PRT) and Italo Ferreira (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 12.

Sebastian Zietz (HAW) will go up against  Adrian Buchan (AUS) and Ian Gouveia (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 10 of the Billabong Pipe Masters.

2012 Pipe Master Joel Parkinson (AUS) will be one to watch in Round 1 as he comes up against 2017 CT rookies Connor O’Leary (AUS) and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).

Day 1 Post Show

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:30 a.m. HST tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for:

Very solid surf will continue on Thursday, but down from Wednesday and on a fading trend through the day. Strong sideshore wind from the NE also prevails. Friday will drop off further as the problematic, strong NE trades continue and conditions will remain far less than ideal. Much smaller NNW swell is expected Saturday with lighter wind also likely. A mid-size, new NW swell is on track to build through Sunday, with a peak Sunday afternoon through Monday morning and generally light and/or favorable wind. A mid to shorter period NNW swell is possible over the final two days of the event window.
